  1. I don't find 'community' particularly useful

Larry Gorenflo - ljg11@psu.edu - I don't find 'community' particularly useful in this context, in that it already appears as a technical term in the ecology and socioeconomic work that I generally do (and that a lot of users of SEDAC, I suspect, also generally do). That stated, I think the secondary headers work well in that they serve to guide users into the site from other angles. I think in general it is a good part of your beta site. Sorry, but again I don't have any real organizational  recommendations or useful comments. Well, except that I suppose one…

  2. Compliments from Larry Gorenflo - ljg11@psu.edu

You guys have done a particularly nice job here … enabling the search by browsing or by theme (agriculture, etc.) … or by year. I searched for some stuff I know already exists and found it quickly … more quickly, I should say, than the old website. I also worked through the themes and found the results very useful. I don’t think I would change anything here; at least, nothing comes to mind in terms of what might be added to make it more useful. As an aside, I particularly liked the additional data that you have up. I have…

  3. include some brief blurb - maybe 2 or 3 sentences - describing the overall mission of SEDAC

Larry Gorenflo - ljg11@psu.edu - I think the homepage does a good job of conveying what SEDAC is about. You might want to include some brief blurb maybe 2 or 3 sentences describing the overall mission of SEDAC and how it fits into CIESIN, or just what the aim of SECAC is. I don't think this is particularly important for many people using the site, as they likely already know and are just signing on for specific purposes (downloading data, looking at maps, etc.), but in terms of what SEDAC is about you could provide a brief synopsis and then…

  4. Link titles of the data sets in the catalog

The "more" button is too small and obscure. Most people will want to click on the title for a full profile of the data set.

  5. Links

The website is looking good and easy to navigate!
    Here are few suggestions

1)When I open map images I find it difficult to navigate back ,either the image can be opened in a new window or there can be navigation menu on top.
    URL:http://beta.sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu:8080/maps/dataset/aglands-croplands-2000

2)In the Featured Uses on home page, link to read more can be given in the title rather than at the end of the news item

3)When I click a news on the right side menu bar it would be good if I see information only about the news item rather than all the news.

  6. consistent font style in data titles

The data title text varies between bold and not bold. It would be better to have just one style (preferably bold).

Issue is due to minor font size changes in titles, which are done on purpose. It only appears like this on Windows XP without cleartype, Windows Vista and above, as well as OS X & Linux handle font rendering properly, so we will keep it as is since XP users will be phased out.
