  1. Open-sourcing your grid-making algorithm

    I'm from the Census Bureau and I am always being asked for a way by which people who wish to analyze our data either across different geographic boundary definitions or over time wherein boundaries changed. It would be so awesome if you guys could open-source your algorithm so that we could share it with the world of folks who need something like this :)

  2. Provide working minimalistic openlayers WMS example

    If you want to use SEDAC WMS with openlayers.js, it would be nice to provide a (link to a ) working sample code like http://jsfiddle.net/F9pUs/ (which actually does not show the SEDAC layer)

  3. Read the data in Matlab

    Hi, I am trying to read the population density data in 2005 and 2015 in Matlab. I am using the following codes.

    [pop, R] = geotiffread('gpw-v4-population-density_2005.tif');
    figure
    mapshow(pop, R);

    The reference R looks normal, but the density matrix pop has huge negative numbers in each entry. I also tried to use Mathematica to read the file, and it also does not work. Could you provide us simple examples on how to access your tif file? Thanks!

  4. WMS Improvement

    Thank you for providing yours data and service.

    I have two suggestion for your server configuration that can improve your WMS

    1) Can you make the content available via HTTPS? (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Security/MixedContent/How_to_fix_website_with_mixed_content)

    2) Can you adding CORS support to the server? (http://www.html5rocks.com/en/tutorials/cors/#toc-adding-cors-support-to-the-server)

  5. make downloads resumable

    Very large data-sets (e.g., global roads at ~200MB) are very difficult to download at one go when in poor/unreliable bandwidth areas. Suggest one or more of the following:
    1. breakup data sets into smaller regional and/or country level chunks
    2. allow downloads to resume after interruption
    3. use distributed methods of serving data (p2p, torrents, etc) ... this will also reduce your server / bandwidth requirements!

  7. Enable SSL Certificate

    Hi I noticed your SSL Cert has lapsed. We link to the metadata and the htttps link used to work but its stopped. Could you enable it?

  8. algorithmically clean some outliers

    Some 1km gridcells in the 2015 UN-adjusted dataset have population values as high as 183,000 persons per km2. These hyperpopulated cells account for ~30% of global population!

    Hong Kong and Brazzavile are two examples: in real life according to wikipedia Hong Kong's densest suburb has density of 57,000 people/km2. Similarly you have values as low as 1e-12. Why not set a ceiling and floor, and redistribute surplus population to the whole country.

    As it stands we users have to do a lot of data cleaning to be able to use dataset but automatically cleaning such outliers should be rather easy…

  9. There is no Europen side of Turkey in Human Footprint Index, v2 Maps

    I have downloaded your Human Footprint Index, v2 maps for both Europe and Asia; there were no Istanbul and other European cities in Turkey in both continental maps. Could you add the European side, please?

  10. Inconsistency in total population

    Hi,

    I am using the gpw v3 density maps on Matlab and I do a spherical integration to compute the total population on the planet.
    For every map from 2000 to 2020, I find 24% more than the UN projects. But the gap between SEDAC and UN counts only accounts for 2 or 3% in 2000 so there is another problem.

    Is it because in cells with both land and sea, the density in the data is the terrestrial density ? It would explain why I get too much total population when integrating while considering that the density is applicable…

  12. Save the data before the trump effect begins?

    Are you joining with the effort to copy climate modeling data from Federal Sites?

    A panic began just after the elections that trump with his cabinet picks will shutdown all Federal sites doing climate modeling work. NOAA and NASA Gistemp are the two most prominent.

    If you can and are willing to, use RSYNC to copy your servers to Switzerland or else Canada servers.

    I have started using data from your servers, gridded 1990 and 2000 US Census numbers. I could be doing some work with max summer temperatures in the future. I hope not lose this site as a…

  13. Download doesn't work

    on this page: http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/set/gpw-v3-population-density/data-download
    After I logged in, filled all the fields (region>global>Pop Density grid>grid>2.5'>2000), and hit "Download", nothing happens. I tried with Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

    Thanks for the feedback. Checking it now. It seems to be working on those browsers for me at the moment. Please try downloading again but bypass logging in by using the ’Guest Download" button at the bottom of the login/signup page that comes up after clicking the download button. Hope that makes some sense. Let us know if you continue have problems.

  14. Human Influence Index 2005-2014?

    I am looking at the possibility of using the HII to understand anthropogenic impact on North American birds as a part of my graduate research. I noticed that the data available is for 1995-2004 and was wondering if 2005-14 is on the works. SO my questions are: 1. Are you working on HII 2005-14? and 2. If you are, will the data be publicly available? When? Thanks.

  15. Increase the number in your display drop down to "All."

    By having to download multiple files, 50 records at a time, it increases the chance for error. But also means I need to spend lots of time making sure I got everything.

  16. not load the OpenLayers map on the homepage by default

    perhaps this can be a snapshot image before trying to load the client everytime someone visits the home page. Click on the snapshot would enable the client or something like that..

  18. fill in Northern Pakistan

    I thought I had a bad download, but the documentation shows a hole in N. Pakistan. This area is filled in VMAP, so it seems like that area could be filled. Is there a version of groads asia that includes this?

  19. information about data encoding

    Hello,

    I downloaded "Gridded Population of the World, Version 3 (GPWv3): Centroids". It is really terrific data! Bravo!

    But I must say that I wasn't able to use correctly administrative level names: problems with diacritic symbols (like "ñ", "ç", "à" etc.).

    I couldn't identify encoding of data (unicode, ISO8859-1, ?). So please could you give information about this encoding (inside metadata?).

  20. Is there any way to download maps in a georreferenced .tif file? Thanks.

    The closest way i figured is to download the ascii file and import it as a raster, but it has no spatial reference.
