I am wondering if the 1980 or 1990 5% sample from the PUMS has a question on the location of one's job within an MSA (within the central city or not).

We have available from our Archive of Census Related Products
(http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/plue/cenguide.html) data dictionaries which contain a full technical description of the PUMS data, please see ftp://ftp.ciesin.columbia.edu/pub/census/usa/pums/dd/

Below are ‘place of work’ variables available from PUMS:

year: 1980 record: person, variable: powmetro (place of work smsa)
year 1980 record: person, variable: powcc (place of work central city)
(ftp://ftp.ciesin.columbia.edu/pub/census/usa/pums/dd/pums80.dd)

year: 1990, record: person, variable: powstate (place of work state)
year: 1990, record: person, variable: powpuma (place of work puma)
(ftp://ftp.ciesin.columbia.edu/pub/census/usa/pums/dd/pums90.dd)

However, our interactive access to PUMS data is no longer available. For interactive access to PUMS data, see Minnesota Population Center

  1. How can I access the 1980 and 1990 Census, STF3a files?
  2. I am having trouble finding how to retrieve the 1980 US census information. Can you suggest where on your website? I can identify the description of it but I cannot access the data.
  3. I am trying to locate maps online of the Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) for all US states and Puerto Rico and haven't had much luck. Can you tell me where I might find these maps?

  5. I have downloaded some 1980 census tract boundary files in "BNA" format from your FTP site but am unable to read them in Arc GIS 8.1. I was told that there should be a conversion program "bna2shp.exe" somewhere on the FTP site but am unable to find it. (I did find bna2mif.exe, and it worked, but Arc GIS was unable to convert the MIF file to a shapefile.) Any ideas?
  6. I was interested in obtaining a Geographic Correspondence file, particularly Block Group to Block, for every state, containing allocation factors for each of the three types of weightings (Pop, Land Area & Housing Units). Is it possible to obtain these .csv files directly from you via FTP rather than tie up the server? Please let me know of any alternative to the website of obtaining these files. Thank you for your consideration.
  7. I'm working with the 1980 PUMS. I just want to make sure I understand the coding of age. Does the age variable refer to the person's age on Dec 31, 1980. If not, what exactly does it measure?
  8. Is there any way to find out how block groups from the 1990 census match with block groups from the 1980 census? I need to find or create data that would show the change in block group characteristics over time. I tried MABLE but it only has block group information for 1990 census.
  9. When will the new 2002 PUMS be available/released?
  10. Where can I find land area data for 1990 census tracts? I am trying to determine the median square mileage of census tracts.
