It is NOT possible to do a time series on the ESI. In the course of producing the ESI in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2005 we refined the methodology considerably; each new edition of the ESI was different in major ways from its predecessors. Any changes from a time series analysis are largely artifacts of improved data and methodology.
