Can I use GPW to study how population in Syria and the surrounding countries is being affected by conflict?

It is important to point out that GPW is based on estimates from each country’s census or population register, and that the last census in Syria took place in 2004. Although we extrapolate the 2004 census counts to 2015, we know that the situation in Syria has changed drastically in recent years, so our confidence in the spatial precision in this country is not very high.

We are in the early stages of working with partners to improve the precision of the data by using more complex dasymetric modeling techniques to take into account the presence of buildings and of night-time lights. These efforts are still in development.
